Unlicensed Medicines Interventions Local Enhanced Service (2019)

West Kent CCG

Project Summary

This is a very innovative project taking a totally different approach than methods used previously to tackle the complex issue of reducing the prescribing of unlicensed medicines in primary care.

This project attempts to make an intervention at the time the prescription for an unlicensed medicine is presented to the community pharmacy for dispensing. A Local Enhanced Service (LES) has been developed to remunerate community pharmacies for making an intervention to stop the dispensing of unlicensed medicines.

The project has resulted in multiple benefits to multiple stakeholders including patients, GPs, community pharmacy teams and the CCG Medicines Optimisation team.
