Highly commended - DOAC calculator (2023)

Heathcot Medical Practice

Project Summary

DOAC calculator is a revolutionise technology approach in medicine optimisation. This particular calculator is mainly designed to ease clinicians in calculating the right dose of DOAC in patient with atrial fibrillation and to ensure all tests and examinations are up to date.

Previously when a clinician does a DOAC review, one would need to go through different pages in EMIS to find all the information, ensuring all is up to date and then use the Ardens template to calculate all the necessary information then from that deduce whether the dose of DOAC is correct. This is usually quite time consuming as loading time for different pages is often long and is prompt to human errors such as misinterpreting the date of the result or the result itself.

With the calculator, it will automatically prompts the clinicians of what tests and examinations are missing and would calculate all relevant information and the dose of DOAC for the clinicians with a press of a button. This turns a long 15-20 minute clinical task into a 2-5 minutes admin task, eliminating human error in the process. With a shortage of clinical staff at the GP surgery in current climate. We believe this will help surgeries to save time and allow clinicians to free up more time to focus on other aspects of the patient. Furthermore, this also means that admin staff can help clinicians when necessary.

This calculator is an early stage development and we have roll out phase 1 of the calculator. Phase 2 is in development and the aim is to batch review all DOACs in patient with atrial fibrillation.
