Transforming medicines optimisation through digital prescription ordering

NAME OF ORGANISATION

Project summary

The Derbyshire Prescription Service (DPS) introduced an online medication ordering form to complement the existing Medicines Order Line (MOL) telephone service. The aim was to provide patients with an alternative, accessible, and efficient route to request repeat prescriptions while supporting system sustainability, reducing GP practice workload and reducing medicine waste.

The online form enables patients (or authorised representatives) to submit medication requests digitally, which are received into a dedicated secure NHS mailbox and processed by trained Prescription Coordinators using a standardised workflow and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).

The core model of managed repeat prescribing is supported while enabling greater access to the MOL service. It is an innovative digital solution that also helps reduce medicines waste, improve patient safety and save costs.

The solution provides patients with 24/7 access to order their medications through an easy-to-use online form, ensuring secure and straightforward use for both patients and their proxies. The system requires no app downloads, user account creation, or login credentials removing barriers to use.
