Bulletin 348. Antiepileptic drugs

This bulletin includes new valproate safety information and support to appropriately switch antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) to safer or less costly alternatives.

Implementation resources such as a data pack with infobriefs, cost comparison charts, GP clinical system searches, audits, patient review letters or text messages and an educational presentation are provided.

There are 3 searches available to support audit and review of patients on AEDs:

Search 1: Brand AED switches to generic AEDs or less costly brands in patients with epilepsy

Searches the GP prescribing system for all patients aged >18 years currently prescribed the following treatments (include acute and repeat prescriptions for the last 12 months and includes only patients with a diagnosis of epilepsy):

Includes the following AEDs (all strengths and formulations):

· Lamictal®
· Topamax®
· Trileptal®
· Keppra®/Desitrend®
· Lyrica®/Alzain®/Axalid®/Lecaent®
· Neurontin®
· Vimpat®/Eplaid®
· Zonegran®

Search 2: Valproate audit

Searches the GP clinical system for the following patients prescribed any valproate preparation (includes acute and repeat prescriptions for the last 12 months):

Group 1: Female child, woman or transgender male of child bearing potential, e.g. aged 9 to 60 years inclusive with an intact uterus (womb).

1.a. Co-prescribed contraception

1.b. Not co-prescribed contraception

Group 2: All new patients (commenced valproate after 31 January 2024), male, female, transgender male and transgender female) aged under 55 years old.

· Depakote®
· Dyzantil®
· Convulex®
· Epilim®, Epilim® Chrono, Epilim® Chronosphere

Search 3: Antiepileptic drugs (AED), excluding valproate, prescribed for a NON-EPILEPSY indication

Searches the GP prescribing system for all patients aged >18 years currently prescribed the following treatments (includes acute and repeat prescriptions for the last 12 months and excludes patients with a diagnosis of epilepsy):

· Lamictal®
· Topamax®
· Trileptal®
· Keppra®/Desitrend®
· Lyrica®/Alzain®/Axalid®/Lecaent®
· All strengths of generic pregabalin tablets
· Neurontin®
· Tegretol®
· Vimpat®/Eplaid®
· Generic ethosuximide
· Generic clobazam
· Zonegran®
