Bulletin 381. CKD AKI sick day guidance

This bulletin discusses the optimal use of medicines to manage CKD and AKI and issuing ‘sick-day guidance’ to people with CKD during periods of acute illness. With the focus on using generic dapagliflozin as a best value sodium glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor in CKD treatment, it also provides potential savings from using generic dapagliflozin by country.

The GP clinical system searches support audit of the following:

  • Patients with CKD prescribed potentially nephrotoxic medication
  • The appropriateness of proactive medicine sick day guidance to reduce the likelihood of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) in patients at risk
  • Patients prescribed SGLT-2 Inhibitors in CKD who may be suitable for a switch to generic dapagliflozin

The EMIS search also contains a pragmatic casefinder in line with QOF and is a more complex search for those wanting to identify patients who should be in the CKD register.
